We drove the new 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge all electric compact SUV for 3 months and over 2,000 miles and here are our thoughts.
The Positives:
- Fast, Quick and Fun all electric acceleration rated at around 4.7 seconds to 0-60MPH. Rated at 402 HP. All wheel drive dual motors distributes the power evenly between both front and back wheels for a planted feel on the road.
- Great looking EV with Solid build quality with no issues with noises or misaligned panels, etc.
- The vertical screened infotainment system powered by Google integration works great for hands free operation. Simply say "hey Google" to start a request like "turn on AC" or "drive home" or "directions to nearest grocery store".
- Front trunk AKA "Frunk" has a decent amount of space for small bags, or charging chords.
- Use of sustainable materials: interior carpeting is made partly from recycled plastic.
- Back area has hidden compartments for lots of variation in holding luggage and even groceries securely.
- Great fit for drivers 6 feet and under. Taller drivers may feel cramped and wish for more room, steering wheel adjustment and legroom.
- The Volvo XC40 Recharge includes complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance for the first 4 years or 40,000 miles. In addition, a New Car Limited Warranty is included with coverage up to 4 years or 50,000 miles.
- Safety is great with all Volvo's and this one is no different as it scores a IIHS Top Safety pick +.
The Negatives:
- Ride quality is a bit on the stiff side vs other Volvo products. Battery weight can cause a slight harsh ride as in most Electric Vehicles. However, this Volvo XC40 Recharge is still smoother to drive than older EV models from BMW (i3) or Mercedes (B250e). We do recommend going with the smaller 19" wheels versus the larger 20" upcharged wheel package.
- Base model does not come standard with the very useful Adaptive Cruise control.
- Feels a little tight inside for taller drivers, it is a compact SUV after all.
- Volvo Car App still needs improving to be fully useful.
- No auto open "Frunk". You will need to manually release front truck aka "frunk" from a standard latch release inside the vehicle.
- Volvo R-Design seats not the best for long driving time comfort as they are a little on the stiff side with sporty contours and not very deep cushions for above average sized humans.
- Range could be better vs competition at the price point. Update from 208 miles to 223 miles helps but still less than the competition.
EVAutoGuide recommendation
- Based on the fact that this is a first year model that may see some great upgrades to range and drive quality in the coming years, and that the current federal rebate of $7,500 goes towards the Volvo lease of this electric car, we would recommend leasing the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
